The new BMW 3 Series – a 360° view of dynamic design
It takes just two tenths of a second for information to travel from the eye to the brain. Yet the new BMW 3 Series Saloon makes its point even more quickly. Every surface, every line, every detail delivers an instant message: dynamic intent. The long wheelbase, sleek bonnet, short overhangs and taut surfaces given an immediate impression of the vehicle’s power. Then you notice the flowing lines and realise that the new 3 Series is not just a very agile sports saloon, but also a very elegant car. However, your eyes are likely to have passed that message on some time ago.
There are 3 components. There is one overall effect.
We have developed powerful free-revving engines, extremely precise transmissions and a finely balanced chassis. But we didn’t stop there. We also made sure that in the new BMW 3 Series, the thing that strikes you is not any one of these parts but the perfect integration of them. This is evident on a short drive to the office just as much as it is on a long journey to your dream holiday vacation. Because right from the start, we wanted you to travel in comfort and style.
6 cylinders produce a great deal of magic.
Power. Refinement. Performance. BMW’s six-cylinder in-line engines have always ranked among the best in the world. The engine in the new 330i comes with two additional benefits: lightweight construction and Valvetronic. The use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the engine’s weight, while increasing the car’s agility. In addition, Valvetronic variable valve lift control makes the engine more powerful and efficient. The new 320i, meanwhile, demonstrates how free-revving the BMW four-cylinder engine is. And the diesel? It’s a masterpiece of efficiency and useable power. Thanks to common-rail technology, the new 302d generates lots of torque from its four cylinders.

We don’t do things by half-measures. We develop complete concepts – for enhanced dynamics and stability. For example, we make both axles share the car’s load equally. This means that the new BMW 3 Series reacts more promptly to steering inputs, with improved directional stability when cornering But truly dynamic driving performance requires other elements as well. Like the hallmark BMW rear-wheel drive concept. Or the optional Active Steering, which increases or decreases the steering transmission ratio in the BMW 330i and 325i* in line with vehicle speed, further enhancing vehicle agility. In critical situations, the driver can also rely on Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). If required, DSC intervenes in the engine management and applies the brakes to one or more wheels in order to keep the care safely on track. The six-cylinder models include additional DSC features, such as brake drying In wet weather conditions, the brake pads are moved until they gently touch the brake discs to wipe them dry, thus ensuring optimum brake performance.
The stronger the engine, the more precision is required in the transmission of the engine’s power. The powertrain in the 330i,for example, converts high engine speeds into optimum dynamic performance. All BMW 3 Series models come with a sporty six-speed gearbox as standard, while an advanced six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. Using Adaptive Transmission Management (ATM), it allows you to adapt your driving style to the current situation. For a sportier drive, simply select the Steptronic mode. In this mode, you tap or pull the selector lever to change gears. Gearshifts are very fast, and there’s no clutch pedal involved.

Every second the human brain has to filter the most relevant information from a huge mass of data. Just as well then, that the cockpit in the new BMW 3 Series supports you in performing this feat. Every detail of the cockpit’s design is focused on the needs of the driver and is ergonomically optimised, to ensure that the vehicle is quick and intuitive to operate in any situation. The optional navigation system with iDrive takes this a step further. This innovative operating concept allows you to control many supplementary functions via a single Controller in the centre console. Related information displays appear in your peripheral vision on a screen in the upper part of the dashboard. Enabling you to keep your eyes on what’s most important – the road.

The 330i. There are many innovations. Let’s take them one at a time.
For 70 years, we have been building in-line engines. Based on long experience and our deep conviction that this is the best possible engine concept. No other engine design offers this level of refinement and efficiency. In the 330i, you can see how strong this tradition can be. Here, the new straight-six engine shows its potential – developing lots of surge and revving effortlessly up to 7,000 rpm, aided by Valvetronic variable vale lift control and the three-level induction system. The new six-cylinder engine also sets standards in terms of light weight construction, marking the first use of aluminium and magnesium in an engine block. 258 bhp (90kW) accelerate the 330i from 0 to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds. The agile BMW 325i*, can call on 218 bhp (160 kW) to deliver superb pulling power. And the four-cylinder in-line engine in the 320i boasts impressive dynamics as well, with a top speed of 136 mpg and 150 bhp (110 kW) of power.
The 320d. It’s absolutely astonishing.
Refinement and efficiency – the muscular, free-revving four-cylinder diesel engine in the new 320d achieves both. 163 bhp (120 kW) take the BMW 3 Series from 0 to 62 mph in 8.3 seconds, with a top speed of 140 mph. A maximum torque of 340 Nm at 2,000 rpm is another indication of this engine’s abilities. Balancer shafts and common-rail technology ensure superior smoothness and efficiency. The high-pressure pump with quantity control optimises fuel distribution.
