The new BMW 6 Series Coupé affords an object lesson in the difference between the commonplace and the truly exceptional. Anticipation is the greatest pleasure – unless you’re talking about driving the BMW 6 Series. Its powerful V8 engine, smooth six-speed manual transmission or optional Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG), which allows Formula One-style paddle-shift gearchanges, mean the reality is more than worth the wait. And let’s not forget time-honoured BMW features such as near-perfect 50:50 balance and rear-wheel drive adding to the surefooted sense of poise and control. Step inside the BMW 6 Series and you can almost feel the potential. One reason is a clear, uncluttered dashboard which sharpens the focus on driving. You’ll notice that the main controls are on or around the steering wheel. Functions like climate control, entertainment and navigation, however, are accessed via the iDrive Controller in the centre console and a Control Display which is within the driver’s line of vision. Use of both devices soon becomes intuitive so you can concentrate of enjoying the drive. Another clever tough is the Head-~up Display, a ‘virtual’ instrument panel projected on the windscreen in front of you. With its instantly responsive and effortlessly smooth 4.4-litre 333bhp V8 engine, the Coupé accelerates from standstill to 62mph in just 5.6 seconds. It’s an impressive achievement we can attribute, in part, to Valvetronic intelligent valve technology. It means the car’s engine breathes a little like you do. The vale opening times are fully and continuously variable so the combustion chambers always get the right amount of air for any given situation.
