It’s rare to see a car and the road it drives on working together in such harmony. However, the BMW 1 Series, with rear wheel drive and near perfect 50:50 weight distribution, delivers perfectly balanced handling and improved levels of traction, giving you the appetite to drive, drive, drive.
As you would expect from BMW, this car exudes an unprecedented level of performance on the road – both visually and dynamically. From its extended bonnet with power dome and long wheelbase with short front and rear over-hangs, to the pronounced shoulder line and distinctive interpretation of the kidney grill and headlights, this is a car that makes its presence known. Whichever way you look at it the BMW 1 Series leaves a lasting impression: powerful aesthetics that portray a car which is wide-awake and bursting with energy.
Whilst this car is full of sporting intent, compromises on practicality were the furthest thing from our designers’ minds. That is why you will find numerous intelligent packaging solutions as well as comfortable accommodation for front and rear passengers alike. Combine these elements with the ample 330-litre boot size and you soon see that the package is perfect.
It goes without saying that the BMW 1 Series possesses all of the usual positive attributes that come with a BMW engine. The four-cylinder petrol engine in the 120i boasts double VANOS, Valvetronic and 150 bhp – accelerating to a top speed of 134 mph through its standard six-speed manual gearbox. Whilst the nifty 116i with double VANOS easily delivers 115 bhp and 125 mph.

We call it efficient dynamics: The 120d delivers 163 bhp and 340 Nm torque for spontaneous, powerful acceleration (7.9 seconds from 0 to 62 mph) and a top speed of 135 mph. And with 122 bhp and an outstanding return of 50.4 mpg (5.6 1/100 km), the engine in the 118d gives the ideal combination of sportiness and efficiency – powering the car up to 125 mph.
In the BMW 1 Series, the seats not only look good – they also provide outstanding levels of support and comfort. Whether you’re driving along winding roads, round hairpins or long, sweeping bends. Alongside the first-class driver ergonomics, the interior is progressively designed and is presented with a wide choice of quality upholsteries and modern, aesthetically pleasing trim finishes. In addition to this, intelligent details such as the optional modular ski bag deliver excellent solutions for everyday practicality.

Using the optional iDrive controller and monitor, drivers can also call up and read information clearly and directly, without taking their eyes off the road.
